The prose writers extend from the thirteenth-century Roger Bacon to John Wilkins and Isaac Barrow (Fig. 3.6), both contemporaries of Aubrey and, like Aubrey, fellows of the Royal Society. Malone follows this chronological lineup when he transcribes the lives on the recto pages of the two notebooks, with his own annotations on the verso, keyed to the transcription by ciphers. One of the casualties of Malone’s chronological rearrangement is its repositioning of the mathematician, scientist, and astrologer and founding fellow of the Royal Society, Sir William Petty. Aubrey had “from the first” intended to give Petty pride of place and accords him the most elaborately decorated page, with a carefully copied and colored image of his heraldic escutcheon as well as a full horoscope (Fig. 3.7).72 That preeminence is lost, however, when he falls into the unremarkable fifty-second place of Malone’s chronological lineup.
